Thought Life Week 10: Stay Alert

I Peter 5:8 & 9

NLT:

8 Stay alert! Watch out for your great enemy, the devil. He prowls around like a roaring lion, looking for someone to devour.

9 Stand firm against him, and be strong in your faith. Remember that your family of believers all over the world is going through the same kind of suffering you are…

The Message (MSG):

8 & 9 Keep a cool head. Stay alert. The Devil is poised to pounce, and would like nothing better than to catch you napping. Keep your guard up.

You’re not the only ones plunged into these hard times. It’s the same with Christians all over the world. So keep a firm grip on the faith.

AMPL:

8 Be well balanced (temperate, sober of mind), be vigilant and cautious at all times; for that enemy of yours, the devil, roams around like a lion roaring [in fierce hunger], seeking someone to seize upon and devour.

Let’s face it.

The times we get trampled by temptation and our own flesh is when we have our guard down.

We’re in a lull.

Taking a break from our Arsenal. “I’m too busy to meditate on that today.” “Oh, I’m strong enough, I can handle this.”

In today’s sex-saturated image-badgered world, we can’t afford to be off alert.

Ever.

So – does Satan really pose a threat?

In the NLT above, Paul calls him the great enemy. So, yes, he can take us down temporarily.

If we give him the power to do so. What? We give him the power?

Those teeth look scary, but they can’t pierce us unless we let them get near us.

Notice the NLT says he is prowling around LIKE a roaring lion.

He’s a pretender.

A deceiver. We all know who the Real Lion is right?? (The Lion of the Tribe of Judah – Jesus! See Rev 5:5. THAT lion is interceding for you today BTW.)

We give our enemy (and our flesh) power over us when we actively listen to his deception.

The best way to overcome his lies about you (“You’re so weak! You’ll NEVER overcome this!!”) is to speak truth from God’s Word out loud.

This is what Jesus himself did in Matthew 4.

Speaking The Word out loud cuts down the lies, reveals The Truth, and sends your enemy scattering.

What good are amazing weapons if you don’t use them?

You can stop your enemy by SPEAKING God’s Truth out loud in the heat of the battle.

You don’t stop until he flees. Jesus had to. We have to.

It’s that simple.

Finally guys, don’t forget your brothers all over the world are facing the same battles. You are not alone. Stay Alert!
